Maternal and Child Health Month

Collaborative Rotary Projects in Uganda

Uganda was identified as one developing country where mother to child HIV transmission in rural areas is still a major issue.

Through ABC the Rotary Club of Middlesbrough made contact with the Rotary Club of Kololo Uganda and a collaborative project was initiated.

The host Rotary Club identified skilled health care providers who had appropriate medical expertise in this field. In parallel they identified a rural community Kayunga with limited access to health care or advice and where infant HIV was prevalent. One of the critical success factors of the project was to engage the elders, the village health teams and local birth attendants firstly to win their trust and educate them in Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). The village health teams and local midwives were trained and equipped to work with HIV positive pregnant women, support & carefully monitor their drug treatment, deliver the ‘at risk’ babies safely and supervise infant and maternal health in the months after birth.Rotary supported this initiative through sound project management, communication & publicity, engaging and connecting key influencers.

Keep this date free: Saturday 20th May – Turaton Music Café. Flyers advertising this event are now available for distribution.

The Echuca Moama Theatre Company (EMTC) will be preforming Monty Python’s Spamalot from Friday 26th May to Saturday 3rd June.

Pie & Port Night   Thanks to all who supported this important event within the Calendar of the RC Rochester.  Guests from Woodend, Bendigo South, Bendigo Strathdale, Camberwell, Altona, Altona City, Melbourne South, Melbourne Central, Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Echuca Moama and Castlemaine enjoyed the informal atmosphere, the welcoming open fires of our Historic Court House and the tasty pies that were supplied by Latter’s Bakery.

Also present were special guests Rotary Rita and her new partner Nev. It appears these two, having escaped from their previous home at RC Bendigo, decided, after a Port or two to become stowaways and headed south where, from recent reports they have been spotted around the Altona & Newport areas.

During the evening DG Neville presented to Pres. Bryan the Conference Attendance Trophy which has alternated during the past few Conferences between RC Rochester & RC Caulfield.
