October – Economic & Community Development
Seven Women is an incorporated not for profit organisation, socially and economically empowering marginalised and disabled women in Nepal through skills training and employment. Our public speaking engagements, fundraising events, donations and sales of goods raise funds to support our centres in Nepal.
We began in 2007 as a grass roots development project to create change for seven women who were found operating out of a tin shed and enduring harsh discrimination as a result of being disabled. Seven Women founder Stephanie Woollard first met these women and invested in training in the hope that gaining a skill would give them a means to earn an income. Steph now designs what is sold herself and funds the project through the sale of the women’s hand-made products. Through a dedicated and passionate team we have been able to establish four centres in Nepal (two in Kathmandu and two village projects) which have trained and employed over 900 women.(from the website)
Pres. Noel welcomed ADG Greg Noonan, Rochester Business Network Secretary Alan Darbyshire, Rotarians Heather, Graeme, Bryan, Stewart and Noel, Guest Gay and Rotary Partners Pam, Jeanette & Robyn to the meeting of 29th Oct. It was pleasing to have Jeanette with us as we have missed her presence over the past months.
Apologies were received from Ray and Russell (LOA)
Several members still sported purple pinkies and reported that these had led to various conversations during the week to inform the curious of Rotary’s involvement with the fight against polio.
Alan Darbyshire informed members of the formation of the Rochester Business Network as a way of revitalizing the Chamber of Commerce and making it more relevant to the local community. The group now has 60 members representing all age groups and businesses. Meetings are held by email and members are committed to work together for the betterment of the community. The recent campaign to encourage blood donations is an example of how community groups are able to work together to achieve a common goal. Future plans for the Network include the continuation of Kidzcappers that will be held in conjunction with the 2016 Easter Town Market, making Rochester grey-nomad friendly and promoting greater use of the car park between Moore and Mackay Streets.
ADG Greg spoke briefly of his 12 week trip through the Northern Territory, the north of Western Australia and South Australia, a journey that allows one to fully appreciate the beauty of our wonderful country. Prior to the meeting Greg met with PP Graeme to discuss D9800’s involvement with ROADEC. Greg also spoke of membership development and was pleased to be present when the RC of Rochester increased its membership by 10%.
Introduced by Src. Heather, Gay Loftus was inducted into the membership of the Rotary Club of Rochester. A former Rotarian, we welcome Gay into the RC Rochester and wish her many happy years of Rotary Service
