Community Recognition Night

Thursday 18th June

Bunnings Warehouse Echuca

131 Ogilvie Avenue Echuca

6:30pm – 7:30pm

During the week, furniture was moved into the second room and with bright tablecloths and serviettes, members were welcomed to a cosy gathering on another chilly evening.  Linda Belot provided a delightful meal and the only things missing were the party hats that had been suggested by Moira.

President Noel welcomed to the meeting Rotarians Heather Watson, Graeme Nelson, Ray Lewis, Noel Schier and Stewart McDonald and partners Pam McDonald and Robyn Lucas We missed the company of Rotarians Russell and Bryan.

Robyn & Noel spoke of their recent visit to Timor Leste as members of Teachers 4 Timor, a group dedicated to providing English lessons to the community of Ainaro.  Since their last visit, many new developments were noted in the capital Dili – cleaner, wider streets and impressive buildings including Timor Plaza, a large shopping centre and cinema complex. While road conditions outside the capital have not improved, there is evidence of large scale road and bridge building works in progress.  An average of 25 students aged from 16 to 35 attended classes, some attending both morning and afternoon sessions.  They were a delightful group of young people that Robyn & Noel got to know well and became very fond of during their eight week teaching program. The opportunity was taken to travel to Maubisse, a 47km journey that took 3 hours and 20 mins by bus with an extra hour spent driving up and down the streets of Ainaro picking up passengers at their front door.  Another weekend was spent in the village of Dare where they were hosted by the parents of one of their students.  The return trip to Ainaro was on the back of a motorbike – a first for Robyn. The experience of living and working within a community leaves one with a lasting attachment to its people and the country.

Farm And Road Safety Expo: Pres. Noel has spoken to the Men’s Shed, asking them to consider having a stand at the Expo with hand tools and presenters to talk to the children about the correct use of the tools.  Noel has also made contact with the organiser of a Farm Safety Day that was recently held at Downside, NSW and which was featured on the County Hour last Wednesday.  Workcover NSW presented a very thought provoking segment on the use of ATV, motorbikes, peewee 50’s etc. It is hoped we can gain  similar support from Workcover Vic.

Steam Rally: Sec. Heather reported on the success of the Camp Cooking at the Echuca Steam Rally under the leadership of Reece Tehan, RC Echuca Moama.  It was a busy weekend but with the assistance of Tim Watson, Roger Lucas, Debbie Bish and Brett Gledhill members and partners were able to manage the demands of this food outlet. Heather, helped by Olinda, Reece’s Timorese guest, produced 45 dampers on Saturday with not a single one ruined by Roger’s cooking.  Sunday saw the making of 70 dampers with the only hitch being caused by an oven malfunction. Heather thanked all involved for making this a pleasurable fund raising weekend activity.

Court House: Plans for the disabled access have been submitted to Campaspe Shire and Heritage Victoria and the Building Permit has been submitted to the Shire.  Quotes for the railing and the access ramp are being pursued.  A draft of hire conditions is to be circulated to members for comment and/or suggestions.

The Bus:  PP Graeme reported that the Bendigo Bank has a full complement for the next trip to Bendigo as part of the Club Red challenge.
