April: Maternal & Child Health Month CALMED (Collaborative Action in Lowering of Maternity Encountered Deaths) is a collaborative programme between Rotary, the Medical Profession, and local Government Departments and Agencies who together with interested Companies can launch an educative programme in parts of the world where Infant and Maternal Deaths are a severe problem. Such deaths are in many cases avoidable if the correct training, practices and basic equipment are available to both the medical profession and local health workers to influence treatment in the first few vital hours of childbirth. Early indications show an encouraging downward trend in child mortality following the visit of the Rotary VTT Team, and a substantial increase in trained staff ‘on the ground’, which will continue to grow through the ongoing local ‘cascade’ training.
