Sec. Heather informed members of the death of Graham Sayers, former member of RC Rochester during the time he was Principal Of Rochester High School, 1972-77.
Guest Speaker: Introduced by PP Russell, Ken Maxfield spoke of his association with Camp Getaway which began in the early 1990’s when, after discovering that there were no specialised camp facilities for the disabled, he spoke to Vance Hilton, DGE of the time, suggesting that this might be a suitable project involving Rotary. Following discussions with District, the Rotary Club of Bendigo handed over the Rotary Axedale Youth Camp which it had established in 1948 and at the 2000 Conference in Canberra, Camp Millennium was launched. Since then the camp has received a tremendous makeover as thousands of voluntary hours from Rotarians, tradespeople and interested community members have gone into redeveloping the site to create self-contained units with full disabled facilities and two modern dormitories that cater for up to 70 people.
At the present time the kitchen area is being redeveloped and when completed the camp can be accredited by the “Australian Camps Association” thus allowing more use by school groups. Ken, as booking officer reported that family groups, church groups and various clubs use the camp on most weekends. During his address, Ken recognised the contribution to the rebuilding of Camp Getaway by the members of RC Rochester through attendance at working bees when the first unit was constructed, the refurbishment of the Observatory and donations towards the kitchen rebuilding.
In thanking Ken, PP Russell presented a copy of the Club’s history. Club banners were presented to Ken and John by Pres. Noel.
