Next Meeting: 14th April at the Court House. 7th April Meeting
April: Maternal & Child Health Month At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Our projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.
The theme this month has special significance to Pres. Noel & Robyn & Sec. Heather as, when sitting on the veranda of the Teachers’ House in Ainaro they have witnessed the funeral processions where the tiny coffins are carried by grieving relatives. Last year we grieved with a dear friend, Celina when she gave birth to her second stillborn baby in two years.
We celebrate and give thanks when our young friends such as Luis & Filomina welcome a healthy new addition to their family when the mother’s health has not been threatened
.Pres. Noel welcomed Rotarians Heather, Gay, Noel, Graeme, Bryan and Ray and Rotary Partners Jeanette and Robyn. Apologies were received from Rtn. Stewart & Pam LOA: Rtn. Russell
ROADEC: PP Graeme thanked those who had assisted in preparing the classrooms and reported that the carpet had been cleaned by Events Centre staff. 18 students sponsored by RC Kangaroo Flat attended the program and positive reports have been received from the 15 students who completed the course. Unfortunately one of the cars used in the program has been vandalised thus resulting in the need to garage the cars in Rochester rather than at the ROADEC site. Advertisements are to be placed seeking additional trainers.
Fund Raising: Don’t forget the Bunnings BBQ this Sunday. We have also requested a Cake Stall at Bunnings for Saturday 21st May. We will require donations of cakes, slices etc. Remember that it was a club decision to apply for this cake stall.
A letter of thanks has been received from Secondary College student Zack Holmberg for the scholarship presented by RC of Rochester.
FARSE: Although some months away, Sec. Heather continues to seek support and sponsorship for this event. An article published in this week’s Campaspe News states that according to Worksafe statistics, farmers are more likely to die at work than any other worker with almost 30% of all workplace deaths in Victoria occuring on farms. Further more, each week 10 farmers are injured seriously enough to make a workers’ compensation claim.
Reminder – Keep this Date Free: Pie & Port Night is back again in 2016 and will be held at the Court House on Saturday, 7th May. Invitations have been issued. Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s size 12 RM Williams leather boots have been immortalised in the Riversands pottery boot series. Filled with 1.5L of Riversands excellent Tawny Port, these boots could be yours.
Recycled Sound, a project of the RC Toorak has recently benefitted by a donation from Pres. Noel. Do you or friends have unwanted Hearing Aids that could be recycled? Spread the word about this program that assists the underprivileged.
End Polio Now: A screening of the film “Eddie the Eagle” will be held at the Paramount Theatre, Echuca at 2.30pm on Sunday 17th April. Tickets at $20. Please confirm attendance with Sec. Heather by Tuesday 12th April. Tickets to be paid for at next week’s meeting.
Our thoughts are with former exchange student Akira Tajima (1965-66) who has recently undergone surgery. While his prognosis is not promising, Akira hopes to make a final visit to Australia.
