Guest Speaker: Introduced by PP Stewart, Veronica Groat spoke of her long time interest in the Campaspe River. Since moving to the area from the Yarra Valley she has become a driving force with the Strathallan Landcare Group that commenced in 2010 and their project to identify Gliders and their habitat. Of the 6 species of gliders native to Australia, 3, the Feathertail, Sugar and Squirrel are found near the Campaspe River. Since 2013, the Squirrel Glider has been listed as an endangered species. Funding from the Shire of Campaspe has enabled the group to extend the report of a previous study and to install nesting boxes from Victoria Park in Echuca to Pascoe St. Rochester. 5 boxes have been installed at the Campaspe Golf Club where a group of Squirrel Gliders has recently been identified. It is believed the gliders moved from the river, through Joc’s Forest at the Murray Goulburn Farm, across the highway to the Golf Club which has proved to have a suitable mix of native trees and shrubs to sustain the gliders. Boxes are installed in groups of 3 and are numbered and given a GPS reference. The Landcare Group, when organising tree plantings near the river, ensure that species chosen are those suitable for the glider population.

PP Stewart moved a vote of thanks and present to Veronica a memento from the Club.

Congratulations to President Kathy Hall and all members of Rotary Caroline Springs for an enjoyable, well organised Charter Night that was attended by Pres. Noel & Robyn along with about 90 others. May you have many years of Rotary Service and friendship.
