December – Disease Awareness & Prevention Month
In May, Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS Prevention (RFHA), a Rotarian Action Group held its third annual Family Health Days in Africa. Rotarians from 365 clubs fanned out across Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa to help medical professionals and government workers provide free health services to 250,000 people. The event included polio and measles immunizations, dental and eye clinics, and family counseling and screening for HIV, diabetes, hypertension, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.
In South Africa, 225 Rotary clubs participated at 160 sites; in Uganda, 65 clubs supported 120 sites; and across Lagos and Ogun states in southern Nigeria, 62 clubs supported 70 sites. Two Rotary Foundation Global Grants provided funding to send vocational training teams to Uganda and to pay for bed nets that will help prevent malaria in Nigeria.
Pres. Noel welcomed Rotarians Heather, Graeme, Stewart and Noel along with Rotary Partners Pam, Jeanette and Robyn.
Apologies were received from Rtn. Bryan who is enjoying his World of Difference tour to Cambodia and Rtn Gay. You may follow Bryan’s tour via Facebook, Search for World of Difference then community group. L.O.A. Russell Anderson.
Russell & Jenny have settled into life in Newman. Jenny is working various shifts at the hospital and Russell is working 4 nights a week as the receivables person at Woolworths. The weekly takings at Woolworths have halved in the past 12 months since the slump although BHP is talking about building another commercial site and there is talk that an IGA store could be part of it. Most of the houses in the town are owned by BHP and all places in the town are air-conditioned. With temperatures ranging from 24 -40 degrees the air conditioners run for 24 hours. Until starting work, Russell swam for an hour each morning but has hardly been since starting work. Russell is enjoying his work, his fellow staff, no stress and the pay packet. Newman has a large Indigenous population and overall is very multi-cultural with many different nationalities. Russell sends regards to all.
Court House: Still an ongoing saga, the promised invoice for the new gas line has still not eventuated a week after the promised 48 hours. Apparently pre-Christmas is a very busy time and we’re not a priority
Congratulations to Sec. Heather who won the raffle conducted by the Rotary Club of Bendigo South.
